What It’s All About
When famous superhero Blackjack the Bold is kidnapped by an evil sorcerer, it’s up to his assistant Inky to step up and save the day! Little does he know that he’ll also have to contend with Ninja Koalas, dark caves, secret weapons, and an abducted princess who’s considerably braver than he is.
Why You Should Do This Musical
Simple enough for young audience members but witty enough for their parents, Super Sidekick is a big-hearted adventure for the full family. From prologue to toe-tapping finale, the show is replete with colorful characters, catchy and accessible tunes, and rollicking adventure. There’s no preaching here, but story themes of courage and girl power will linger after the show’s over. Plus, there are ninja koalas.
The Particulars
The cast can be as small as seven and with an extensible chorus can accommodate a larger group. Suitable for any mix of grownup or young performers. The villain is a goofy archetype and won’t be scary to young audience members. The score can be performed with live musicians, or from pre-recorded tracks. While the music isn’t super demanding vocally, select solo numbers will allow talented performers a chance to shine.
Need To Know
Super Sidekick: The Musical won “Best of Fringe” at the Hollywood Fringe and the FringeNYC Encore Award at the New York Fringe — and was the first ever children’s show to win the latter prize! Its Off-Broadway run was also a New York Magazine Critic’s Pick, favorably mentioned by The New York Times, and, if you ask us, a hoot and a half. Super Sidekick has been produced by young audience theatre ensembles around the country, including Topeka Civic Theatre, Columbus Children’s Theatre and The Treehouse Troupe.
