Alienne by Jim Colleran
(Full-Length Musical, Comedy / 12 any gender youth + ensemble)
A rollicking parody of a timeless classic, Alienne transports Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid into the wacky world of outer space. With plenty of audience participation and goofy humour, this spaced-out adventure is ideal for young audiences and their families.
Ben and Imo by Mark Ravenhill
(Full-Length Play, Drama / 1w, 1m)
Originally written to mark the centenary of composer Benjamin Britten’s birth and performed on BBC Radio 3 in 2013, this powerful play explores the brilliant yet often turbulent working relationship of two of the 20th century’s greatest musical minds. To mark the occasion of the 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Britten is commissioned to write an opera about Elizabeth I in nine months. The disheartened composer enlists the help of Imogen Holst, an accomplished musician in her own right. Her can-do attitude works to balance the often-maddening Britten, and what first begins as an arrangement of musical assistance turns into a friendship that sees Gloriana to its premiere.
Cowbois by Charlie Josephine
(Full-Length Play, Comedy / 4w, 8m, 3 gnc adult, 1 boy)
In a sleepy town in the Wild West, the women drift through their days like tumbleweed. Their husbands, swept up in the gold rush, have been missing for almost a year and show no sign of returning. In fact, the town is almost cut off from outsiders entirely, with only one drunken sheriff for protection. That is until handsome bandit Jack Cannon swaggers up to the town’s saloon, looking for a place to hide from the bounty hunters on his tail. Armed with whiskey and a wink, and a gun by their side for good measure, Jack’s explosive arrival inspires a gender revolution and starts a fire under the petticoat of every one of the town’s repressed inhabitants in this silly and surreal shakeup of a Western.
Grief Hotel by Liza Birkenmeier
(Full-Length Play, Dark Comedy / 3w, 2m, 1 gnc adult)
News of a missing acquaintance brings old friends (and ex-lovers) back together. Relationships re-form around natural and unnatural disasters, and everyone ends up at Aunt Bobbi’s house, even though her parties are cursed. Loss is fast, but grief is slow, and Aunt Bobbi’s going to try to make everyone feel better. Liza Birkenmeier’s new play is a dark comedy about the commodification of healing.
The Night Shift Before Christmas by Isaac Gómez
(Full-Length Play, Dramatic Comedy / 1w)
Meet Margot, a 30-something Tejana who works at a beloved whata-sized burger joint in Houston, Texas. The Christmas Eve overnight shift is her personal tradition – even if that means spending the holiday dealing with grumpy drive-thru customers and an equally grumpy robotic Santa. But when her dead best friend Jackie Marley drops by to warn her of impending late-night visits by spirits, Margot has no choice but to roll with the punches and confront the very Scrooge she’s become. It’s a Christmas Eve like none other in this brand-new holiday show filled with humour and heart set in H-town by Texan playwright Isaac Gómez.
Vladimir by Erika Sheffer
(Full-Length Play, Drama / 3w, 4m)
This haunting play unfolds in Moscow, where an independent journalist covering Putin’s first term struggles to maintain sanity and hope in increasingly hostile circumstances. She finds herself on the brink of an explosive story – but as danger mounts for her and her sources, she questions whether her bravery will make any difference at all. Vladimir is about standing up to immorality no matter the cost when you know your nation is headed for disaster.
Waiting by Gail Young
(Full-Length Play, Drama / 6w, 4m + ensemble)
This historical drama – loosely based on the playwright’s own family history – follows a family as they face the outbreak of World War II. From parents Jessie and Peter to their three children to their extended relatives, the Wright family as a whole is torn apart when the bombing reaches a crescendo in what came to be known as The Liverpool Blitz. Seeing war through the eyes of those left on the home front back in Bootle, this story is a sweeping portrait of the shared experience and grim reality of desperately awaiting the news of loved ones during war.
White Noise by Suzan-Lori Parks
(Full Length Play, Drama / 2w, 2m)
Long-time friends and lovers Leo, Misha, Ralph and Dawn are educated, progressive, cosmopolitan and woke. But when a racially motivated incident with the cops leaves Leo shaken, he decides extreme measures must be taken for self-preservation. A play about race, friendship and our rapidly unraveling social contract.
