Every theatre maker has the same challenge: How do we get folks to come back show after show, season after season?
One surefire way to fill those seats is to present a series of related shows, making your audience look forward to the next installment.
How? You could present one full season of related plays or musicals, or you could spread the wealth over several seasons, featuring one show in the series in the same slot each year. (For example, each fall, you could open your season with one title from the same series.)
For comedies, treat the series like a sitcom, promoting each production as “the further adventures of ___,” saying, “You loved ’em last year… come back this year to see what they’re up to now!” For dramas, try focusing on the content, stressing the ideas and questions raised by the series through talkbacks, lobby displays or supplemental materials.
Whatever you do, enjoy the ride! This broad selection of trilogies, sets and series ranges from slapstick farces to penetrating, socially conscious dramas. Dive into the first show – and if your audience responds positively, make it a recurring event.
The All Long True American Stories series
by Julia May Jonas
This cycle of five “response plays” reimagines canonical 20th-century male-experience plays originally written by men as they’d be lived by other people – mostly women – as written from the perspective of a woman playwright. As of 2026, two of the plays in this cycle have been written, licensed and produced at professional theatres: the first a response to Arthur Miller’s All My Sons (US) and the second a response to Sam Shepard’s True West (US). Both offer substantial roles for women at the center of the stories and a chance to increase parity in your productions, from casting to creatives.

The Brother/Sister plays
by Tarell Alvin McCraney
This triptych of plays set in the bayou of Louisiana draws on West African myths to bring the themes of family, love and heartache to the forefront. The first follows a “sister” track star who faces hurdles on her race toward womanhood, the second dramatizes the story of two brothers and the different choices siblings make for their lives, and the third brings us back to adolescence, telling a provocative, poignant and fiercely humorous coming-of-age story of a young gay man in the South. Each play offers varied and complex roles for Black actors, and programming the entire cycle allows a theatre to build a relationship with both these creatives as well as audiences who may resonate with the stories at hand.

The second jumps back in time to the 1940s, as a gifted trumpeter contemplates selling his once-vibrant jazz club in Detroit’s Blackbottom neighborhood as the shutdown for “urban renewal projects” looms large. In the third, we jump forward once more to 2008, exploring the effects of the Great Recession on the auto industry through the personal lives of a stamping factory’s workers. Each play in the trilogy centers the Black experience with detailed characters and poignant themes that bring both laughter and tears to adult audiences.
